Support Services

WABC offers two support services. A Mentoring Program for beginners to learn basic skills from an experienced player in Supervised sessions and a Buddy Program for more advanced players wanting to transition from Supervised sessions to general play.

These programs give newer players the chance to gain bridge knowledge and confidence and more experienced players to share their love of the game and be a part of the growth of bridge in our club.

Mentoring Program

WABC offers members the opportunity to play with a Mentor to ensure that they have a positive experience in a club duplicate setting. Allocated according to availability, Mentors are experienced players who have volunteered to support and encourage Mentorees in the Supervised Session setting.

Who can ask for a Mentor?

  • Members who are graduates of the lessons (generally Advanced Beginners) who are planning to play in the Supervised Sessions

  • Members who are playing in the Supervised Sessions

  • New members who are not familiar with local club Duplicate systems and etiquette

  • Returning members who would like a refresher on current playing systems and etiquette

The Process

Members can be mentored on their own or with a partner. The Mentor will make themselves available for four Supervised Sessions at mutually convenient times. The mentor will encourage and guide the Mentoree in basic bidding and card play and introduce bridge etiquette. These four sessions will be free for all players involved. We ask that Mentorees arrive 15 minutes before their start time.

Buddy Program

The Buddy Program is unique to WABC. It is a service for members wanting to transition from Supervised Sessions to Duplicate Bridge. Our Buddies are experienced players of all standards who will share their understanding of Duplicate Sessions and ensure the transition is as easy as possible.

Who can ask for a Buddy?

  • Any member who would like to commence playing in Regular (not Supervised) Duplicate sessions

  • Players participating in Supervised Sessions at WABC

  • A more experienced player new to WABC but unfamiliar with duplicate play at WABC

The Process

A Buddy will be allocated to the member according to mutual availability and will make themselves available for two Regular Duplicate sessions at a mutually convenient time. The Buddy will introduce their protegee to each set of opposition as they move around the room. They will explain the layout of the tables, the boards and how the movements flow. They will reinforce many etiquette conventions including scoring and the checking of scores on the Bridgemate. These sessions will be free for both players. It is suggested that they be seated East/West for one session and North/South for the other.
