2024 Gold Coast Congress

There were a lot of West Australians at the 2024 Gold Coast Congress amoung the hordes of bridge players who descended on Broadbeach. It is one of the best congresses in the world and this year the number of players attending were approaching those pre-covid.

A number of WABC players did well.

Jo Theriault, Brenda Campbell; Eve Clarkson & Sandra Veling came second in the Restricted Teams (<300 Masterpoints)

Jeff Veling & Jamie Luxton (Undercroft) playing with two New Zealanders Tracy Gieck and Sandy Close won the Novice Teams (<100 Masterpoints).

Earlier in the week, Andy Hung playing with Alex Smirnov made the Open Pairs Final and came second. Slightly disappointing but an excellent result. It’s hard enough even making this final with 225 pairs trying to qualify for just 20 spots.

Viv Wood playing with Sue Lusk (Adelaide) also made the Open Pairs Final, coming fourth, and were the highest placed Women’s Pair. Well done!

Mimi Packer playing with Simon Hinge won the G Final.

Linda Coli playing with Jamie Thompson won the H Final. If you think these were easy tasks it’s worth noting that the H Final included two of the four players that made the Open Teams Final which is the premiere event at the Congress.

And finally the Rainbow Lorikeets, noisy and everywhere, a bit like the bridge players.
