The club opened its doors after the Christmas and New Year festivities for the first session of 2023 on the morning of Monday 2 January. Leading the way and setting a tough precedent for the year were Valda Gray & Alice Buzza winning North South with an impressive 67.9%. Sylvia Bray & Ziggy Morawiec were first East West with 60.1%.

January has been a hot month and sitting in the air-conditioned club was a relaxing and pleasant way to play bridge, socialise, and keep busy.

Andy Hung started the year with an exciting win as a member of the Ashton Team (Sophie Ashton, Peter Gill, Sartaj Hans, Nabil Edgtton, Michael Whibley, Andy Hung) in the National Open Teams in Canberra. The competition was entertaining to watch on BBO with some very interesting boards. Andy was beaming when he returned to his regular session at WABC - a great start to 2023.

WABC held the Charles Pearce Cup over four consecutive Wednesdays in January. The winners were the WABC pair with the best score over any three sessions. Kate Pinniger and Carla Sullivan won the Regional or above Masters category and Peter Gunzburg and David Martino won the below Regional Master category.

Many WABC members competed at the 2023 Mandurah Summer Congress. Sandy & Jeff Veling together with Andrew Stavianou and Eve Clarkson were placed 16th overall and won the Restricted category.

The month closed with a wonderful event, a sundowner, featuring Chrissy Bray who is the daughter of our President Sylvia Bray. Chrissy is a professional entertainer based in the UK and was visiting Perth over the summer. Chrissy put on a most entertaining show getting many people to perform riffs of well known songs. By the end of the evening everyone was up rocking and rolling to her singing. Video of the evening
